How Refreshing!
The post below is from a man I used to attend church with in Norman. Due to his job, he moved out to Amarillo. This is really refreshing coming from a Missionary Baptist...who is of my parents age. This is something that I had been emphasizing for a long time. How many of us, that grew up in a traditional church setting, ever heard the "we've never done that before"...since that was always said, the churches would never adapt. As long as the truth is not compromised (truth being the Bible), then I strongly believe that we should do whatever it takes to reach the people of the world. Here is my old MBC friend's, Bro. Ben, thoughts:
In the days of the Apostle Paul many churches met in the homes of believers rather than buildings built for public meetings. Later, great cathedrals began to be built as memorials to Jesus Christ not for the purpose of meeting large public forums. While I’m not against building buildings for people to meet I think we should consider the value of spending our building money on evangelism, outreach, sending missionaries and winning souls to Christ. If we do these things first the need for and the means to build subsequent buildings will come. I think the Lord’s churches and all of God’s people need to get this straight in our hearts and heads.
I want to make two quick points here and then I’ll move on.
First, It is long past time that we Missionary Baptists stop living and ministering in the 60’s, 70’s, and even 80’s. This is 2007. The 21st century. Just 10 short years ago technology moved us from cassette tapes and VHS tapes to CD’s and DVD’s. Today, you hear less and less of people buying CD’s and if they do they’re largely blank and tracks are down loaded from the internet. But most of the time these tracks and even movies are downloaded to an MP3 or i-POD.
We simply are not ministering or witnessing to the same people our parents and mentors once did. Albert Einstein, although I don’t think he realized how profound, said, “The world has problems today that cannot be solved by thinking the way it was thought when we created them.” Now there is one thing that never changes: The Word of God. Period! But the world in which we live needs God’s people to consider how we can effectively evangelize without compromising the truth. And I for one do not believe evangelism happens only inside the churches’ walls.
Second, I draw your attention to a familiar passage. Romans 10:14-15 “How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!”
If the world will not come to the preacher how shall they hear the gospel? The gospel must be taken to the world (evangelize). Whatever it takes we should be doing. Change is not easy. It sometimes is even uncomfortable, but if we are not faithful evangelizing our own towns, neighborhoods and friends how can we expect God to send us to the four corners of the earth to do it?
